Harvey Johnson (reverend)
Harvey Johnson (born August 4, 1843) was a leading African American pastor, activist, and longtime leader of the Union Baptist Church during the 19th century.
== Personal life ==
Harvey Johnson was born on August 4, 1843 in Fauquier County, Virginia to Harriet and Thomas Johnson, who were subjected to slavery and worked on a plantation. Once his parents were freed, they migrated to Alexandria, Virginia. Following the war, Alexandria black population grew and a number of institutions was created. One that stood out in particular to Harvey and his parents, was the Alfred Street Baptist Church. Johnson completed four years of college and graduated from Washington, D. C.’s Waylard Theological Seminary in 1868, with honors. Johnson married Amelia E. Hall on April 17, 1877. She was an Afro- Canadian born in Montreal in 1868. Amelia met Reverend Harvey Johnson in Baltimore after her family had relocated to Baltimore in 1874. The two married a few years later. Amelia born three children by Harvey, two sons Harvey Jr. and Prentiss, and a daughter named Jessie E. They remained married until her death during the spring of 1922.
